CMS.gov No Surprises Act

The No Surprises Act section of CMS.gov provides information about federal rules to protect consumers from unexpected medical bills.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), which is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, publishes the website and prepares its content.

Information includes explanations of consumer rights when using insurance (through restrictions on unexpected out-of-network charges) and when not using insurance (through rights to a “good faith estimate” of charges), as well as a warning about how signing a notice and consent form can remove protections against out-of-network charges.
