LownInstitute.org Ratings

LownInstituteHospitalsIndex.org rates and ranks hospitals based on measures of equity, value and patient outcomes.

The Lown Institute, a nonprofit organization, publishes the Hospitals Index. It explains its methodology in detail on its website.

Tips for use:
– From the Hospitals Index home page, find facilities by name or state. Each hospital is rated for patient outcomes, value and equity as receives an overall social responsibility rating based on performance across these three measures.
– “Outcomes” is based on clinical outcomes, patient safety and patient satisfaction; “Value” is based on both cost efficiency and how well a hospital avoids overuse of 12 specific procedures; and “Equity” is based on pay equity, community benefit and inclusivity.
– When hospitals are filtered by state, they are listed by default according to their overall rating. Use the Choose a Metric to order hospitals by equity, value or patient outcomes, or by subcategories within these three measures.
– Special reports discuss and rank hospitals on unnecessary back surgery, coronary stent overuse, and racial inclusivity.
